Short Description
We are as the psychosocial team member of a humanitarian agency and assigned to help the affected community. As Psychosocial team we have to create some programs to bring back the new normally lives of affected population in disaster area. So, what kind of steps will we take to establish he psychosocial program?

- Assessment of the situation of children
Of course as the psychosocial team before we establish our programs, we need to look deeply into the disaster problem and affected population in the field. How we do that? Of course the right answer is assessment. We can use some methodologies to conduct assessment in the field. Like the session before, some methodologies have been taught, for example PRM, field observation, and also depth interview. But, we thought that the best methodologies to measure the impact of disaster is the combination between qualitative and quantitative. Like:
1. Participative Ranking Method: This method is usefull to see the participation of the community to decide what are the best interest for their needs. So, we as a facilitator for them, we are facilitate them to decide what are the best interest fro themselves. This method also usefull as a “contract” between the humanitarian agencies and the affected community.
2. Field observation: Observation methodology is use to see and describe all the situational in the field. This method also can be use for cross check with the PRM data. So, we are not onky based on community perception, but also the real situation in the field based on our perception. This decision is important to plan the intervention for affected population.
3. Work together with community actors (local people who know the field/ local NGO): The most important to conduct psychosocial programs are working together with local people in the field. Working together with them is the best way to go deeply into the affected population, this also the best way to gain their trust. Especially working in eastern country where all the people are most likely collective.
4. Field survey: For the quantitative data we can also use the field survey. We can take few sample and conduct small survey with them, like what is the most important stuff in the field, etc.
- There are meny more methodologies that can be used in disaster area, but we taught that it depends on what information we need, what kind of programs we plan to conduct in the field, is it economic strengthening program or tracing and reunification program? So, basically the methodologies for assessment is depends on the information we need and the program itself.

Designing activities for children
-It is important to secure the venue for children. But it also depends on the activities of children before the disaster happened. So the usefulness working with the local people is they know what kind of activities before the disaster happened, for example if the daily activities children in the affected community/population are going to school, and after the school finished, children are like to play soccer in the field, at noon children are getting back to their home. After we know the daily activities, we must rying to build/create the new normally activities for them.
- Before we developing the new activites we have to looking for a venue for children in disaster area. After we got the venue we must secure it and its only for children activities, not for youth. Why we have to do this? Because children in disaster area is really vulnereable for exploitation and trafficking. In disaster area, we know that all the economical activites are paralyzed, because of this, we have to really be carefull doing a program for children.
- The most important agenda working with children in disaster area is doing no harm. Why its important? Because its based on the Convention on therights of the child. Children in disaster area must have the same rights like children in normal situation. One simple act to support the child right is doing no harm to children in disaster area. This principal also important because disaster also have impact for their psychological well being. To know and measure that psychological impact in children is very hard, so the principal doing no harm for children also important to gain their psychological well being back.
- Some example for psychosocial program related to children are:
1. Tracing and reunification
2. Build a school (just small school in the tend to bring back the activities for children again)
3. Create playground for children
4. Shelter for traumatic child

This is most important thing to measure the successfulness of our psychosocial programs is evaluation. How we evaluate the psychosocial and psychological well being? It’s all the things that we cant see. We thought is very important to develop some indicators related to our program and cultural context in the field. We also can use the psychological instrument to measure the psychological well being of children in disaster area. But, the most important principal is autonomous of community. When we see their become autonom, we can predict that our programs will be going to success.
Some tools related to evaluation process like:
- Psychlogical test for victims with psychological disorder
- Observation guide about their daily activities (Is there any production, distribution an consumption for and by themselves)
- Participative Ranking Method about the psychosocial program (Perception study to measure the effectiveness of the program)
