We decide that the venue to develop is the children center.
This program is important after we have done the assessment in collaboration with local NGO and local community. Based on the assessment the community needs a safety place for children to play and to learn, while their parents went to their farm or cleaning their house. From the parents perspective they need a trusted person or institution to help them to relief their children’s trauma and prepare their children to facing the merapi eruption situation.

Why develop the Children center:
1. After the emergency situation it is important for children to relief their trauma and back to normal life situation. So in the children center we develop several programs that will be useful for their children. While the children playing their parents will have time for working or visiting their field without worries because their children are in the safe place and under professional monitoring.
2. The program on children center was developed based on the cultural background.
· For example in story telling session we use the wayang stories, like Hanoman. This story tell the traditional values for being strong and never surrender even in difficult situation. In addition to that, a child in Central java and Yogyakarta use to know the stories; so it is closer to their heart and their mind.
·The drawing and writing session give the children opportunity to describe their fear, anxiety, their hope and their need. From this session we will know how children experienced traumatic situation and we know the coping mechanism base on the child perspective.
·Dancing, singing, and playing together are created not only for trauma relief but also teaching children how to react properly in emergency situation. For example while we are playing, we teach children how to find the safety place in merapi eruption and how to use the masker. We have role play to teach children if they separate from their parents, where did they should go and asking for help.
Counseling: We encourage the children to tell about their daily activity, are there any problem in their house or their school, to tell about their friend so the children feel to have new friend from adult for example social worker, volunteer, etc
3. Doing No Harm
This concept is very important because our program should admitted by community, and base on their need, and do not jeopardize their condition. Doing no harm means that when we develop program should respect the cultural and social context and respect the children rights. For example we should respect the local value that girls and boys around 12 or juvenile should be separated or the local belief that not allow to visit the children center on magrib . In other side we should tell the community to give the change equity for girls to attend to the children center, even in local community there is value for girls to stay at home.
Doing No Harm and related to culturally sensitive
Doing No harm is very important for every program develop for the children, because it violates local wisdom, not only our program didn’t have any support by the community, but in many situation we can put the children in difficult or dangerous situation. For example if we open the children center on magrib (time of sunset prayer), the parents will not allow the children to come. And if the children are coming, they may get the corporal punishment from their parents.
When we develop program taking into account “doing no harm” concept, it can also help to build trust with local community. Furthermore this situation is not only make our process going smoothly but also bring good out comes.
The important thing is that all program to be developed will have to involve local community, local NGO (if any) or other stakeholder to obtain support from the community of the program.
